What many coaches look at in outsides
Depending on level and system, many coaches weight a similar set of skills for the outside hitter spot. Show these things happening repeatably — not as one-off highlights.
- Attacking range — line, cross, high seam, tool off the block.
- Six-rotation value — passing in serve receive and defending in the back row.
- Arm speed and shot variety against a real block, not just open net.
- Blocking on the left pin and reading hitters' shoulders.
- Transition — getting back off the net, approaching from out-of-system, finishing.
- Competitiveness in close points and long rallies.
Context matters — some programs prioritize a pin terminator, others want a six-rotation OH who passes and plays defense. Target based on roster need, not on program brand.
What to show in your highlight video
- Aim for roughly 60–90 seconds. Lead with attacks against a real block.
- Show swings from multiple sets — in-system go, push, high ball, out-of-system bail.
- Include back-row attacks (pipe / D) if you take them.
- Include serve receive reps against jump float and jump serve.
- Show transition: defense → approach → kill in the same clip when possible.
- Add at least one full point that shows read, move, swing, and cover.
- Intro card: name, grad year, height, approach touch (with source), club, jersey, six-rotation Y/N.
How to email coaches about this position
- Subject example: '2027 OH | 6'1 | 3.9 GPA | 6-rotation | Triple Crown 7/12-14'.
- Open with grad year, height, approach, club, and whether you play six rotations.
- Tie one sentence to that program's offensive style or recent result you watched.
- Include a 60–90 second highlight link near the top, not buried at the bottom.
- Close with a court and approximate time at a tournament they can attend.
How to communicate six-rotation value
Outsides who pass and play defense widen their list at every level. If that's you, make it impossible to miss.
- Say 'six-rotation OH' in the subject line and the first sentence.
- Include passing rating with the scale and source (3-point, 2.5, club, MaxPreps).
- Put a serve receive clip in the first 30 seconds of your highlight.
- Mention specific back-row reps — pipes taken, defensive zones, coverage on tips.
How College Volleyball AI helps
Athletes can use the app to organize and communicate their process — track schools and coaches, save outside-hitter snippets (#stats, #passing, #approach, #camp), schedule follow-ups, and keep video updates flowing to the right staffs.
Outside hitter checklist
- 60–90 second highlight with real-block swings, back-row attacks, and serve receive.
- Stats with source — kills/set, hitting %, passing rating, and the events they're from.
- Per-school genuine that names a returning OH or a graduating one in your grad year.
- Camp/tournament schedule with courts and times the staff can plan around.
- Pipeline + reminders so OH outreach doesn't pile up during club season.
